Growing Food in our Classroom with the Garden Tower 2
Our gardening adventure continues. Recently we "put the gardens to bed". Farmer Emily told us to pull up all the dead plants, and cover the beds with a blanket of leaves. This will help the garden to be ready for spring planting. We also worked on a seed saving project, so some of the seeds we plant in the spring will be from our own garden.
Inside, our worms are doing a great job of turning food scraps into rich soil that we are then using on the indoor plants we are growing. We have indoor lights, set on a timer, to provide good growing conditions for the winter months. We love our worms!
We are starting to see some growth now. Our cucumbers are getting so big we had to build a trellis for them to climb on. Our parsley and carrots are coming along nicely!
We are so excited! Parkdale Food Centre is letting us use one of their Tower Gardens. Plants grow very fast in this garden. We are hoping to be able to harvest from here and from the outdoor garden, and make a donation of fresh food to the Heron Road Food Cupboard, our local food bank.
Our outdoor garden is starting to grow! We planted seeds as well as small plants that we grew inside the classroom. Now all we need is some sunshine!
